With this, the patient makes it possible to seek treatment that can help to slow the effects of Alzheimer’s, or at least give them a longer time to prepare for the inevitable.
As Engadget reports, researchers from the University of Bari in Italy, have recently made some impressive progress to detect the disease early. They developed AI or artificial intelligence, where it seems that they have successfully developed an algorithm capable of detecting Alzheimer’s as early as 10 years before symptoms can appear.
What the researchers did was that they had given AI 67 MRI scans of 38 Alzheimer’s patients, and an additional 29 of those who did not have the disease. The scans are then subdivided into small areas and AI is then used to analyze the nerve connectivity between them.
Then, the researchers placed the AI to test by scanning the brain of 148 subjects, of whom 48 had Alzheimer’s, while 48 others had mild cognitive impairment that could later lead to Alzheimer’s.
Artificial intelligence is capable of diagnosing 86% of Alzheimer’s patients and 84% of mild cognitive impairment. but the system is still far from the word ready to use normally due to the limited number of scans being tested.
